Japan, 2015 - Wajima-nuri

Wajima-nuri (Wajima lacquer) is an unique industrial art rooted in the city of Wajima, on the Noto Peninsula. It is laboriously handcrafted, taking one year for the production of the beautiful and durable lacquerware.

Over one hundred processes are used in its production, undertaken by highly trained artisans. Techniques like Wankiji (shaving of the wood), Nunokise (attaching cloth for strengthening), Jitsuke (undercoat application) and Makie (gold and silver decoration) have been passed down from generation to generation of Wajima-nuri producers.
